From September 24–25, 2009 I had the privilege of participating in the Colloquium on Baptist Church Music at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. This was a fantastic time of scholarship and collegiality among a group of church musicians, professors, and scholars who have devoted their lives in the service of the music of the church. Among those who presented papers at this Colloquium were David Music, Randall Bradley, Harry Eskew, and Paul Richardson. You can find all of the presentations here.
I presented a paper entitled, The Growth of Calvinism Among Southern Baptists in the Twenty-First Century and Its Effect Upon Baptist Church Music. This paper examined the resurgence in traditional Reformed-Calvinist theology in Southern Baptist life and sought to determine some of the distinguishing features in the music of these churches. I surveyed a wide range of churches on both sides of the soteriological discussion and discovered some interesting findings.
Below you can watch my presentation or read the finished paper.
